About me

Stefano Pellegrini

I am an astrophotographer and landscape photographer from Italy. Awarded with the APOD by NASA three times.

I travel the World hunting for the darkest night skies and the best views. I'm in love with the deserts, and remote locations. I've been to Africa many times, in different locations, but I fell in love with Botswana, its unseen landscapes and is pitch-black sky with no light pollution.

I make tutorials and private lessons, and many have asked for an astrophotography workshop on the field, so when I finally decided to do it, I opted for doing ii under the best sky conditions ever: African ones.

8 Days in the Desert

It will be and expedition into the wilderness, with tent in the desert, safari, cinematic sunsets, and explosive milkyways. Forget about Namibia and South Africa: here you will see the real pristine Africa, no lights, no cities... only our small group and the stars!

Trip Overview

Day 1

August 1st

Maun – Nxai Pan

You will be picked up from Maun and travel to the Nxai Pan (Travel time: ±4 hours). After getting accostumed to your safari accomodation (two person tent, with beds, toilet and bucket shower) you will enjoy a photo lesson at Baines Baobabs, discovering all you will need to know for your fisrt night shooting in the African Desert. After dinner we will get our first lession on the field , shooting togheter among the iconic baobab trees.

Day 2

August 2nd

Nxai Pan National Park

Enjoy a leisurely morning at camp followed by a midday photography & editing lesson. In the afternoon, we’ll embark on a game drive combined with sunset landscape photography. Then after sundown a night photography session roaming freely alone between the trees, capturing the Milky Way and star trails over the pans.

Day 3

August 3rd

Nxai Pan – Kubu

After a breakfast near the jeep we will move to Kubu Island. This location will offer the most photographic opportunities, with plenty of interesting subjects to shoot. After lunch, join a midday photography workshop to be ready for our sunset photo session, and especially our night photography the rocky island. We will start shooting togheter as a group, and then you will be able to choose by yourself between the thousand of possible frames of this incredible location.

Day 4

August 4th

Kubu Island

This morning is dedicated to relaxation and editing time. After brunch, join a midday photography workshop. In the late afternoon, we will set out for a safari and sunset photo session, followed by night photography beneath the crystal-clear African skies. We will have a star-traker lession on the field and you will be able to try the MSM Nomad. provided by our sponsor.

Day 5

August 5th

Kubu Island

After an early morning safari, return to camp for brunch and a photography lession. After a shower we will have dinner looking at the sun setting on the African horizon, and be ready for our second night of astrophotography on Kubu Island. Who will want, will be able to capture both the summer arch eraly in the night and the inverted arch after midnight.

Day 6

August 6th

Kubu - Kumaga

After an early departure, we’ll travel north to the Kumaga region (Travel time: ±6 hours), in the magical area of the Okawango Delta, a photographer’s paradise with its ancient trees, wildlife, and reflective waterways. On arrival, enjoy a lesson on lightpainting techniques before an evening of night photography under the Magellanic Clouds

Day 7

August 7th

Kumaga Community Area

Following a relaxed morning, we will hold a photography lesson, followed by an afternoon game drive capturing golden-hour wildlife and sunset shots. The evening will be dedicated to final night photography, applying all techniques learned throughout the tour.

Day 8

August 8th

Kumaga – Maun

After breakfast, we will make our way back to Maun, concluding this unforgettable astrophotography safari through Botswana’s wilderness. We will use the drive out of the park to make our last safari to spot wildlife for the last time before going back to civilization. Guests will be dropped off at their preferred accommodation or the airport for onward travel.

What we will shoot

The Workshop main aim will be to capture the best milkyway you ever shoot! But we will also catch Magellanic Clouds, star-trails and the African sunset & sunrise... And don't forget a zoom lens, we will find time to do some safari and frame the famous big game of Africa!

Lessons

What we will learn?

This tour is good for both beginners and advanced shooters. Everyone will be followed before, during and after shooting. What you need is your gear, and to be familiar with your camera settings and to be ready to shoot in manual mode*.



*Is recommended:a DSRL, a wide lens, a telephoto lens and a tripod. If you are unsure about your skill level or gear please feel free to contact us and ask any questions.
**PhotoPills is a third party app, but is recommended as part of the material on the lessions.

You will only need to land with your camera gear, and from there on, all will be taken care of by us. You will just need to learn, shoot & enjoy the Southern Hemisphere sky!
